Union Advisor

Vortex Strategy & Recruitment is actively seeking a union advisor for its client, one of the largest national unions. The position is based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

We are looking for someone who is already based in this area or someone who is willing to move to Saskatoon. Of course, our client is responsible for all the moving expenses

 

Responsibilities

  • Works closely with central council managers, committees and unions
  • Oversees the activities of activists with respect to the defense of injured or sick workers and may be called upon to coordinate, in its service territory, all interventions related to such cases.
  • Acts as necessary as spokesperson for a union in negotiation, conciliation or mediation.
  • Provide for the training of members in trade unions, particularly with regard to aspects related to the roles of the managers, structures and services of the company, rules of procedure, union accounting, mobilization, labor and social legislation, and if necessary, acts as a trainer.
  •  May represent a union in disputes under Part II of the Canada Labour Code. 6. Investigates, evidences and pleads cases before appropriate administrative tribunals or acts as a union assessor in the course of their work.
  • Researches the case law and doctrine necessary for the cases it has to defend and may be called upon to use the appropriate technical means
  • Advises trade unions and their members on the key labor laws.
  • Participates in forums, promotes and shares the orientations of the movement and promotes the mobilization of the members within the framework of the policies put forward by the appropriate forums

Skills

Knowledge or training

·       Bilingual (will be required to work in both languages)

·       General knowledge of relevant laws.

·       Basic knowledge of the rules and modes of evidence applicable to administrative tribunals.

    Specific skills

·       Ability to prepare and write any documents or reports relevant to their work.

·       Ability to assess the economic and socio-political situation of a sector, region, industry or service.

·       Ability to develop argumentation and communicate information held to various groups of people.

Other requirements

·       Availability as required by the department.

·       Knowledge of the labour movement and adherence
